Sales Tax

Sales Tax

Sales tax rules vary by state and product type. creavio helps you configure the right rates, apply them to invoices automatically, and track what you've collected for easy filing.

Setting Up Sales Tax

  1. Go to Money > Settings > Sales Tax
  2. Enter your business state and county
  3. creavio suggests the current combined rate (state + local)
  4. Verify the rate and click Save

If you operate in multiple jurisdictions, add additional tax rates and assign them to specific clients or services.

What Gets Taxed

Tax rules vary, but commonly:

  • Tangible products (prints, albums, USBs) — taxable in most states
  • Digital downloads — taxable in some states
  • Services (photography session fees) — varies widely by state

creavio lets you mark each line item on an invoice as taxable or tax-exempt so only the right items are taxed.

Tax on Invoices

When sales tax is enabled, invoices automatically calculate and display the tax amount as a separate line item. Clients see the subtotal, tax amount, and total clearly.

Sales Tax Report

Go to Money > Reports > Sales Tax to see:

  • Total tax collected for any period
  • Breakdown by rate if you have multiple jurisdictions
  • Taxable vs. exempt revenue
  • Export for filing with your state tax authority

Important Notes

  • creavio calculates tax — it does not file or remit tax on your behalf
  • Consult your accountant about which services and products are taxable in your state
  • Keep your rates current — tax rates change periodically
  • If you're unsure whether to charge sales tax, ask your CPA before your first invoice

Getting sales tax right from the start saves headaches at filing time. Set it up once and creavio handles the math.
