creavio for Freelance Photographers

Starting Your Freelance Photography Business

You have the camera. You have the skill. Now you need the business. Freelance photography is not just about taking great photos. It is about getting found, getting booked, getting paid, and getting referred. creavio handles the business side so you can focus on the craft.

This guide is for photographers in their first two years of business. No fluff. Just the steps that matter.

Setting Up creavio From Scratch

Start With the Free Plan

You do not need a paid plan on day one. creavio's free tier gives you a CRM, booking page, invoicing, contracts, galleries, and a basic website. That is more than enough to land and manage your first 10-20 clients.

Upgrade when you are consistently booking 3+ sessions per month and need automation to keep up.

Your First Session Types

Do not overthink this. Create 2-3 session types that reflect what you actually want to shoot:

  • If you shoot portraits, create "Portrait Session — 60 min"
  • If you shoot events, create "Event Coverage — Half Day" and "Event Coverage — Full Day"
  • If you are not sure yet, create "Photography Session — 1 Hour" as a catch-all

You can always add more session types later. Starting with too many options overwhelms both you and your potential clients.

Set Your Prices

Pricing is the hardest part for new photographers. Here is a starting framework:

  1. Calculate your monthly expenses (gear payments, insurance, software, gas)
  2. Decide how many sessions per month you can handle
  3. Divide expenses by sessions. That is your minimum session fee
  4. Add your desired hourly wage on top
  5. Round to a clean number

Do not price based on what other photographers charge. Price based on your costs, your time, and your market. Read our full guide on photography pricing models for deeper strategies.

Landing Your First Clients

Your Booking Page Is Your Storefront

Share your creavio booking page everywhere: Instagram bio, Facebook page, email signature, business card. When someone asks "do you do photography?", the answer is a link to your booking page. Not "DM me." Not "let me check my schedule." A link.

Portfolio First

Before you book paying clients, you need a portfolio. Options:

  • Friends and family: Shoot them for free or at cost. Be upfront that you are building your portfolio.
  • Styled shoots: Collaborate with florists, makeup artists, and models. Everyone gets portfolio content.
  • Personal projects: Shoot what you love. Street photography, landscapes, still life. Show your eye.

Upload your best 20-30 images to your creavio website. Quality over quantity. A portfolio of 15 strong images beats 100 mediocre ones every time.

Get Reviews Early

After every session, even free ones, ask for a review. Use creavio's automated follow-up to send a review request 3 days after gallery delivery. Build social proof from day one.

Managing the Business Side

Contracts Are Not Optional

Even for a $100 session, send a contract. It protects you and establishes professionalism. creavio includes photography contract templates. Use them. Customize with your specific terms. Send before every session.

Get Paid Before You Shoot

Require at least a 50% deposit at booking. This eliminates no-shows and establishes that your time has value. creavio's invoicing handles deposits and payment plans automatically.

Track Every Expense

From day one, track every business expense in creavio's expense tracker. Gear, gas, props, software subscriptions, education. Come tax season, you will be grateful. Most new photographers leave money on the table by forgetting deductible expenses.

Growing From Freelancer to Business

Specialize

The fastest path to higher prices is specialization. "Photographer" is generic. "Newborn photographer in Austin" is specific. Once you find the genre you love, lean into it. Update your creavio website, session types, and portfolio to reflect your specialty.

Raise Your Prices

If you are booking more than 80% of your available slots, your prices are too low. Read our guide on raising your photography prices for scripts and strategies.

Build Systems Early

The photographers who burn out are the ones who do everything manually at scale. Start building systems now, while you are small. Every questionnaire, every contract, every follow-up email should be a template in creavio. When you go from 5 sessions per month to 15, those templates save your sanity.

Freelance photography is a real business. Treat it like one from the start and you will build something that lasts.
