Instagram Strategy for Photographers

Instagram Strategy for Photographers

Instagram is where photographers get found. It is a visual portfolio that reaches clients who would never find your website through Google. creavio's social media manager makes Instagram intentional instead of chaotic.

Content Strategy

Posting random images does not build a following. You need a content mix:

  • Portfolio work (40%): Your best images from recent sessions. These showcase your style and attract ideal clients.
  • Behind the scenes (20%): Setup shots, editing process, day-in-the-life. People connect with the person behind the camera.
  • Client stories (15%): Testimonials, before/afters, client experience highlights. Social proof in action.
  • Educational content (15%): Tips for clients (what to wear, how to prepare, why professional photos matter). Positions you as an expert.
  • Personal (10%): Non-photography content that shows your personality. Clients hire people, not portfolios.

Scheduling with creavio

Go to Growth > Social > Compose to create and schedule posts. For each post:

  1. Select the image(s) from your creavio media library. No need to download and re-upload.
  2. Write your caption. creavio's AI can suggest captions based on the image's metadata (mood, subjects, location).
  3. Add hashtags (see below).
  4. Select your posting time or use the Best Time suggestion based on your audience analytics.
  5. Click Schedule.

View your scheduled content on the Calendar tab. You should see a consistent posting rhythm, not clusters and gaps.

Hashtag Strategy

Hashtags expand your reach beyond your followers. Use a mix of three tiers:

  • Large (500K-5M posts): #weddingphotography, #familyphotos, #portraitphotography. High volume, high competition.
  • Medium (50K-500K posts): #[city]weddingphotographer, #naturallightportrait, #outdoorfamilysession. More targeted.
  • Small (5K-50K posts): #[city]photographer, #[venue]wedding, #[neighborhood]portraits. Highly local, less competition.

Use 15-20 hashtags per post. Save hashtag sets in creavio so you can apply them with one click instead of typing them every time.

Reels and Video

Instagram prioritizes video content. Post Reels 2-3 times per week:

  • Session behind-the-scenes (15-30 seconds)
  • Before/after editing transformations
  • Client reactions to gallery reveals
  • Trending audio with your photography overlaid

Schedule Reels through creavio's composer. Upload vertical (9:16) video from your media library.

Posting Frequency

Consistency matters more than volume:

  • Feed posts: 3-4 per week minimum
  • Stories: Daily if possible. Stories disappear after 24 hours, so the bar is lower.
  • Reels: 2-3 per week for maximum algorithm boost

Batch your content creation. Spend 1-2 hours on Sunday scheduling the entire week. Do not scramble for content daily.

Analytics

Check Growth > Social > Analytics weekly. Key metrics:

  • Reach: How many unique accounts saw your content
  • Engagement rate: (Likes + Comments + Saves) / Reach. Aim for 3-6%.
  • Profile visits: Are people clicking through to your profile?
  • Website clicks: Are profile visitors going to your booking page?
  • Follower growth: Steady growth means your content resonates. Stagnation means it is time to experiment.

Converting Followers to Clients

Followers are not clients until they book. Bridge the gap:

  • Put your booking link in your bio
  • Use a Link in Bio page (built into creavio) to showcase services, recent work, and a booking CTA
  • End captions with a call to action: "DM me for availability" or "Link in bio to book"
  • Respond to DMs within 2 hours during business hours. Speed wins.
