Quarterly Tax Estimates
As a self-employed photographer, the IRS expects you to pay estimated taxes four times a year. Missing these payments leads to penalties. creavio helps you calculate and track what you owe.
Why Quarterly Taxes Matter
When you're an employee, taxes are withheld from every paycheck. As a self-employed photographer, nobody withholds taxes for you. The IRS requires quarterly payments if you expect to owe $1,000 or more in taxes for the year.
Due Dates
- Q1: April 15
- Q2: June 15
- Q3: September 15
- Q4: January 15 of the following year
How creavio Calculates Estimates
Go to Money > Tax Estimates to see your current projection. creavio uses your revenue and expenses recorded in the platform to estimate your taxable income. It applies the standard self-employment tax rate (15.3%) plus your estimated income tax bracket.
Setting Up Your Tax Profile
- Go to Settings > Tax Profile
- Enter your filing status (single, married filing jointly, etc.)
- Enter your estimated tax bracket or let creavio calculate it from your income
- Add any other income sources that affect your bracket
- Indicate your state for state tax estimates
Tracking Payments
When you make a quarterly payment to the IRS, record it in creavio under Money > Tax Payments. This keeps your running balance accurate and prevents overpaying or underpaying in future quarters.
The Safe Harbor Rule
To avoid penalties, pay at least 100% of last year's total tax liability (110% if your income exceeded $150,000), divided into four equal payments. creavio can calculate this for you if you enter last year's total tax paid.
Disclaimer
creavio's tax estimates are for planning purposes only. They are not tax advice. Consult a qualified tax professional for your specific situation. Every photographer's tax situation is different based on entity type, deductions, state laws, and other factors.
That said, having a clear projection beats guessing. Most photographers who track revenue and expenses in creavio find that tax season becomes significantly less stressful.
