Blog Setup Guide

Blog Setup Guide

A blog does two things for photographers: it helps Google find you, and it gives potential clients a reason to trust you before reaching out. Session features, behind-the-scenes stories, and venue guides are search magnets.

Creating a Blog Post

  1. Go to Website > Blog
  2. Click + New Post
  3. Enter the title — make it specific. "Sarah and James | Meridian House Wedding" beats "Recent Wedding."
  4. Write your content in the rich text editor. You can:
    • Add headings (H2, H3) for structure
    • Insert images from your media library
    • Embed videos
    • Add links to your portfolio, booking page, or other posts
    • Use bold, italic, lists, and block quotes
  5. Add a featured image — this appears at the top of the post and in social sharing previews

Categories

Organize posts into categories for easier browsing:

  • Go to Blog > Categories
  • Create categories like "Weddings", "Portraits", "Behind the Scenes", "Tips & Advice", "Venue Guides"
  • When writing a post, select one or more categories

Categories create filtered views on your blog page. A visitor interested only in wedding content can click the "Weddings" category and see just those posts.

SEO Settings Per Post

Each post has SEO fields at the bottom:

  • SEO Title — the title that appears in Google search results. Under 60 characters. Include your location and session type for local SEO.
  • Meta Description — the snippet below the title in search results. Under 155 characters. Make it compelling enough to click.
  • URL Slug — the post URL. Use hyphens, keep it short, include keywords.
  • Open Graph Image — the image shown when the post is shared on social media. Defaults to featured image.

Example SEO setup for a wedding post:

  • Title: "Meridian House Wedding — Sarah & James | DC Wedding Photographer"
  • Meta: "A summer wedding at Meridian House in Washington DC. See the full gallery from this elegant celebration."
  • Slug: meridian-house-wedding-sarah-james

Scheduling Posts

Instead of publishing immediately, set a future publish date. The post stays as a draft until the scheduled time, then goes live automatically. Useful for maintaining a consistent posting schedule.

Blog Page Layout

Your blog page at yourdomain.com/blog shows posts in reverse chronological order with:

  • Featured image
  • Title
  • Excerpt (auto-generated from the first paragraph or manually set)
  • Date and category

The layout inherits your site's theme styles. No separate configuration needed.

Blog Post Ideas for Photographers

  • Session features: Every delivered session can become a blog post. Write 2-3 paragraphs about the couple/client, the venue, and the vibe. Add 15-20 images.
  • Venue guides: "Best Wedding Venues in [City]" posts rank well in local search and attract couples planning in your area.
  • What to wear guides: "What to Wear for Your Family Session" — answers a question every client has and shows you are helpful before they even book.
  • Behind the scenes: Show your process. Clients love seeing how the sausage is made.

Connecting Blog to SEO Strategy

Each blog post is a new page Google can index. Over time, a blog with 20-30 posts targeting "[session type] + [city]" keywords creates a web of content that feeds your search visibility. See SEO for Photographers for the full strategy.
