Styled Shoots Build Portfolios and Relationships

A styled shoot is a planned photo session with a team of vendors, designed to create portfolio content for everyone involved. No paying client. Just a group of professionals investing in their craft and their marketing.

Planning the Shoot

Define the Concept

Start with a clear vision: the mood, color palette, season, and venue style. Create a mood board using Pinterest or Canva. This becomes your communication tool with every vendor.

Assemble the Vendor Team

Common styled shoot collaborators:

  • Venue: Often provided free in exchange for portfolio images
  • Florist: Provides arrangements in exchange for images
  • Stationer: Creates invitation suite and paper goods
  • Dress designer or boutique: Provides gowns or outfits
  • Hair and makeup artist: Provides beauty services for the model
  • Model(s): Professional or friends willing to participate
  • Stylist: Handles tablescape, decor, and overall aesthetic

Track all vendor contacts in a creavio client record tagged as "styled-shoot-vendor." Store their contact info, social handles, and business names for credits.

Logistics

Create a session in creavio for the styled shoot. In the session notes, document:

  • Date, time, and location details
  • Setup and breakdown schedule
  • Shot list organized by scene or setup
  • Vendor arrival times
  • Model schedule (hair and makeup timing, outfit changes)

During the Shoot

Photograph everything. Detail shots of the florals, stationery, and tablescape. Wide shots of the full setup. Model portraits. Behind-the-scenes moments. The more variety, the more each vendor can use.

Capture shots that serve different purposes: blog-worthy editorial images, social media content, and detail shots for vendor portfolios.

Delivering to Vendors

Create a creavio Collection with all edited images. Share the gallery link with every vendor. Set permissions to download enabled so they can grab what they need.

Include a document or note with usage terms:

  • Credit requirements (how to tag you when posting)
  • Usage scope (social media, website, print)
  • Editing restrictions (no filters on top of your edits)
  • Publication exclusivity window (if you plan to submit to a blog)

Getting Published

Styled shoots are your best shot at blog features. Before sharing the gallery with vendors, submit to your target publications first. Many blogs require exclusivity — the images cannot appear on social media or websites before the feature is published. Set a clear timeline with your vendor team: "Do not post until [date] or until the feature goes live."

Building Vendor Relationships

Styled shoots build relationships that generate referrals during real booking season. The florist who loved working with you on a styled shoot recommends you to their wedding clients. The venue coordinator adds you to their preferred vendor list. These relationships compound over time.

Styled shoots are work without a paycheck. But they are not free. They generate portfolio content, vendor relationships, publication opportunities, and social media material that pays dividends for years.
