How to crop an image
- Add one JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF or HEIC photo: drop it on the box above, or choose it from your device.
- Pick Free, or a ratio of 1:1, 4:5, 3:2, 4:3, 16:9 or 9:16, or type a custom width and height. Drag the photo to move the frame, drag the corner to resize it, and use zoom to tighten it.
- Choose JPG or PNG, type an output width and height if you want an exact size, then download. Nothing is uploaded.
What the crop keeps
A crop keeps a rectangle of the photo and leaves out the rest. The ratio is the width divided by the height. 16:9 means sixteen units of width for every nine of height. A free crop can be any rectangle inside the photo. A locked ratio keeps that shape while you drag, resize and zoom.
The output size is the pixel width and height of the file you download. Leave both size fields empty and the page uses the crop, rounded to the nearest whole pixel, and it says so when it rounds. Type one side while a ratio is locked, and the page works out the other side and shows the final size under the boxes, with the rounding stated. Type both sides and the crop box takes that shape, so the photo is never stretched. Press Apply size or Enter to use them. The saved file is exactly that many pixels wide and tall.
JPG is the default. It has no transparency, so transparent pixels are filled with white, and the file is saved at quality 92 out of 100. PNG keeps every transparent pixel. One photo at a time: choose Clear to start again with another photo.
Questions
Is it private?
Yes. The cropper is a page, not an upload: your browser opens the photo, crops it and saves the result to your device. No file is sent to creavio or to anyone else, and nothing is stored after you close the tab. The HEIC decoder downloads once, the first time you add a HEIC photo.
Which formats can I crop?
JPG, JPEG, JFIF, PNG, WebP, AVIF and HEIC. An SVG is not accepted. A file the browser cannot decode shows a message and is not cropped.
Is there a file size limit?
Each photo can be up to 50 MB. A larger file shows a message and is not added. The finished crop also has to stay within this browser pixel limit. A larger size shows a message and is not saved.
Which browsers does it work in?
Current versions of Chrome and Safari. It uses features built into the browser, so there is nothing to install. The HEIC decoder is part of the page, so the browser does not need to open HEIC itself.
HEIC decoding uses heic-to and libheif, free software licensed under the GNU LGPL 3.0. They are included unmodified as a separate file, loaded only when you add a HEIC photo. The source code is at the links above.
