How to use the tool
- Add a photo, or drop one on the box.
- Pick a print size, then drag and zoom the crop.
- Read how large it prints at 300 ppi and download a JPG or a PNG.
How wallets are sold
Mpix sells standard wallets at 2.5 x 3.5 with rounded corners in a set of 4, and mini wallets at 1.75 x 2.5 with square corners, a set of 8 printed on a single sheet. Mpix does not say how many standard wallets share a sheet. It notes the rounded corners and asks you to double-check your crop before you submit your order.
Shutterfly lists wallet prints at 2.5 x 3.5 and shows them as Wallet (4). It does not say how many share a sheet.
Walgreens Photo sells a 2 x 3 wallet set: a single print sheet with 4 images in 2 x 3 inch size.
Pixels for a wallet
Mpix gives 250 x 350 as the minimum for a wallet and 625 x 875 as optimal, and 150 x 250 and 438 x 625 for a mini. Walgreens gives 270 x 180 as its minimum. Shutterfly recommends wallets for photos under 640 x 480.
Questions
Is 2 x 3 the same shape as 2.5 x 3.5?
No. 2 x 3 is 2:3 and 2.5 x 3.5 is 5:7. A crop made for one is trimmed for the other, so crop for the lab you order from.
Is it private?
Yes. The crop runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded. The HEIC decoder downloads once, when you first add a HEIC photo.
Why 300 ppi?
It is the labs' figure. Mpix recommends 250-300 DPI, Walgreens at least 200 PPI (its developer page says 300 DPI), and Shutterfly 300 dpi or higher for scans. The tool divides your pixels by 300.
Does the tool enlarge my photo?
No. The download is your crop at the photo's own pixels. As Walgreens notes, you cannot increase the resolution for images.
HEIC decoding uses heic-to and libheif, free software licensed under the GNU LGPL 3.0. They are included unmodified as a separate file, loaded only when you add a HEIC photo. The source code is at the links above.
