How to make an Instagram grid

  1. Add one JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF or HEIC photo: drop it on the box above, or choose it from your device.
  2. Pick the rows and columns, 3 x 3 to start, and the tile shape: square 1:1, 4:5 or 3:4. Drag the photo to choose the part the grid keeps.
  3. Download the zip of tiles, named in the order to post them. Nothing is uploaded.

How the photo is split

The page crops the photo to the shape of the whole grid, then cuts that crop into equal tiles, so the tiles meet edge to edge. Layouts are rows x columns: 3 x 3 is three rows of three, 1 x 3 is one row of three, and 3 x 1 is one column of three.

Each tile is 1080 pixels wide, the widest size Instagram publishes for a post. Worked out from each shape, a square tile is 1080 x 1080, a 4:5 tile is 1080 x 1350 and a 3:4 tile is 1080 x 1440. Instagram accepts posts from 1.91:1 to 3:4, and all three shapes sit inside that range. A photo with too few pixels for 1080 wide tiles gives smaller tiles, because the page never enlarges a photo, and it says so.

The posting order

The files in the zip are named in the order to post them. post-01 is the last tile, at the bottom right, and the top left tile is posted last. The number after "tile" is the tile's place in the grid, counted left to right from the top, so post-01-tile-09.jpg in a 3 x 3 grid is tile 9 of 9.

Questions

Is it private?

Yes. The grid maker is a page, not an upload: your browser opens the photo, cuts the tiles and saves the zip to your device. No file is sent to creavio or to anyone else, and nothing is stored after you close the tab. The HEIC decoder downloads once, the first time you add a HEIC photo.

Which formats can I use?

JPG, JPEG, JFIF, PNG, WebP, AVIF and HEIC. The tiles are saved as JPG at quality 92 out of 100.

Is there a file size limit?

Up to 50 MB, within this browser's pixel limit. A larger file shows a message.

Which browsers does it work in?

Current versions of Chrome and Safari. It uses features built into the browser, so there is nothing to install.

HEIC decoding uses heic-to and libheif, free software licensed under the GNU LGPL 3.0. They are included unmodified as a separate file, loaded only when you add a HEIC photo. The source code is at the links above.
