Client Review Strategy

Client Review Strategy

Reviews are not a nice-to-have. They are the foundation of photographer marketing. 92% of consumers read online reviews before making a purchase decision. For a service as personal as photography, reviews are often the deciding factor between you and a competitor.

The Review Collection System

Do not leave reviews to chance. Build a system:

  1. Deliver the gallery. The client is at peak satisfaction.
  2. Wait 3-5 days. Let them share images and receive compliments from friends/family. This amplifies their positive feelings.
  3. Send the review request. Use creavio's automated follow-up sequence so you never forget.
  4. Make it easy. Include a direct link to your review form. Do not make them search for it.
  5. Follow up once. If no response after 7 days, send one reminder. Then stop.

Where to Collect Reviews

Focus on 2-3 platforms maximum:

  • Google Business Profile: Highest priority. Affects local search ranking directly. See GBP setup.
  • Your creavio website: Reviews you control and display on your own site.
  • The Knot / WeddingWire: If you do wedding photography. Couples browse these platforms specifically for vendors.

In your review request email, give clients a choice: "Leave a review on Google (link) or on my website (link)." Let them pick whichever is easier.

What Makes a Good Review

Generic "She was great!" reviews do not help much. Guide clients toward specifics:

  • What type of session did you have?
  • How did the experience feel?
  • Would you recommend us to a friend?
  • What stood out most?

These prompts are built into creavio's review form. Specific reviews help potential clients see themselves in the experience.

Leveraging Reviews in Marketing

Collecting reviews is only half the battle. Use them:

  • Website: Display testimonials on your homepage, service pages, and booking page
  • Instagram: Create quote graphics from your best reviews. Post one per week.
  • Proposals: Include 2-3 relevant reviews in your proposals. A wedding review in a wedding proposal.
  • Ads: Use review quotes in ad copy. "Rated 5 stars by 150+ clients" is powerful social proof.
  • Email marketing: Feature a client review in your newsletter or seasonal announcement.

Review Velocity

Google rewards consistent new reviews over a stockpile of old ones. Aim for 2-4 new Google reviews per month. This signals an active, trusted business.

If you photograph 8-12 sessions per month and request reviews from all of them, a 30% response rate gives you 3-4 reviews monthly. That is all you need.

Handling Negative Reviews

It will happen eventually. When it does:

  1. Do not panic. One negative review among 50 positives does not destroy your business.
  2. Respond publicly within 24 hours. Be professional. Acknowledge the concern. Offer to resolve it privately.
  3. Fix the underlying issue. If the complaint is valid, update your process to prevent it from happening again.
  4. Do not argue. Potential clients read your response more carefully than the original complaint. Grace under pressure impresses people.
  5. Ask happy clients to review. The best response to one bad review is ten good ones.

Tracking Review Performance

Monitor in creavio and on each platform:

  • Total review count across all platforms
  • Average rating
  • Review velocity (reviews per month)
  • Response rate (what percentage of clients leave reviews when asked)

Set a goal: by the end of the year, have X total reviews with a Y average rating. Track monthly progress.

Legal Note

Never offer incentives for reviews ("Leave a review and get $50 off your next session"). This violates the terms of service for Google, Yelp, and most review platforms. Ask genuinely. Accept the result.
