Up to 20 files, 50 MB each. Converted on your device.

How to convert HEIC to PNG

  1. Add your HEIC photos: drop them on the box above, or choose them from your device. You can add up to 20 at once.
  2. Your browser converts each one to PNG right away. Nothing is uploaded.
  3. Download each PNG, or download them all together as a single zip.

What is a HEIC file?

HEIC is the file an iPhone saves when the camera is set to High Efficiency, the default since iOS 11. It stores a photo in the HEIF container, compressed with HEVC, so photos stay small without an obvious loss in quality.

Support is the problem. Chrome, Edge and Firefox do not display HEIC, many upload forms reject it, and Windows needs extra codecs to open it. To shoot JPG instead, set the iPhone to Settings, Camera, Formats, Most Compatible.

What is a PNG?

PNG is a lossless format: every pixel is stored exactly, and saving a PNG again changes nothing. It supports transparency, which makes it the usual choice for logos, graphics and screenshots. A photograph saved as PNG is several times larger than the same photo as a JPG.

Questions

Is it private?

Yes. The converter is a page, not an upload: your browser opens each file, converts it and saves the result to your device. No file is sent to creavio or to anyone else, and nothing is stored after you close the tab. The HEIC decoder downloads once, the first time you add a HEIC photo.

Is the quality kept?

PNG is lossless, so nothing more is lost once the HEIC is decoded, and the pixel dimensions match the original. Colors are saved in sRGB at 8 bits per channel, so HDR and wide-gamut color are brought into standard range. Live Photo motion, depth data and EXIF metadata are not included, and the PNG is much larger than the HEIC.

How many files can I convert at once?

Up to 20 at a time. Download them one by one, or all together as a single zip.

Is there a file size limit?

Each image can be up to 50 MB. A larger file shows a message and is not added.

Which browsers does it work in?

Current versions of Chrome and Safari. The HEIC decoder is part of the page, so your browser does not need to support HEIC itself.

HEIC decoding uses heic-to and libheif, free software licensed under the GNU LGPL 3.0. They are included unmodified as a separate file, loaded only when you add a HEIC photo. The source code is at the links above.

Zip files are built with fflate (MIT license).
