Detail

Tracing suits logos, signatures, icons and line art. A photograph becomes flat shapes.

How to convert PNG to SVG

  1. Add one PNG: drop it on the box above, or choose it from your device.
  2. Your browser traces it to SVG on your device. Nothing is uploaded. Set the number of colours, the detail, and whether to remove a flat background.
  3. Download the SVG. Most transparent areas in the PNG stay transparent.

What is an SVG?

SVG is a drawing described as shapes and curves, not a grid of pixels. It stays sharp at any size, and Illustrator, Affinity Designer and Figma can open it.

What is a vector, and what is a raster?

A vector is the shapes in an SVG. A raster is the pixels in a JPG or PNG. Tracing turns a raster into a vector by fitting flat shapes to the colours it finds.

When does tracing work?

Tracing suits logos, signatures, icons and line art, and most transparent pixels stay transparent. A photograph becomes flat shapes, because the tracer uses a small number of colours rather than every pixel.

Questions

Is it private?

Yes. The tracer is a page, not an upload: your browser opens the file, traces it and saves the SVG to your device. No file is sent to creavio or to anyone else, and nothing is stored after you close the tab.

Is the quality kept?

Smooth detail uses ltres 1, qtres 1 and path omit 8. Exact detail uses ltres 0.5, qtres 0.5 and path omit 0. The longest side is scaled to 1500 pixels before tracing, and the SVG has a viewBox so it scales. Colours run from 2 to 16, and the page starts at 8. Before tracing, the edge of a filled shape that touches a fully transparent pixel is made transparent, so the stroke does not paint into empty pixels. A line one or two pixels wide is kept. Most transparent pixels in the PNG stay transparent; on our test logos at least 95% did.

How many files can I convert at once?

One file at a time. If you drop several, the first one is traced.

Is there a file size limit?

The file can be up to 50 MB. A larger file shows a message and is not added. Before tracing, the longest side is scaled to 1500 pixels.

Which browsers does it work in?

Current versions of Chrome and Safari. It uses only features built into the browser, so there is nothing to install.

Can I edit the SVG in Illustrator, Affinity or Figma?

Yes. The download is an SVG file with a viewBox. Illustrator, Affinity Designer and Figma open SVG files, and you can edit the shapes there.
