How to convert MP4 to GIF

  1. Add one MP4 or MOV video: drop it on the box above, or choose it from your device. It can be up to 500 MB.
  2. Type the start and the end as seconds, such as 1.5, or play the video and choose Start here and End here. Pick a width, a frame rate, and whether the GIF loops.
  3. Choose Make GIF. Your browser draws each frame and writes the GIF. Nothing is uploaded. Check the preview, then download the GIF.

What is a GIF?

GIF is an image format from 1987 that holds a short animation as a series of frames, with no sound. Each frame can use at most 256 colours, so a GIF made from video can show banding in skies and skin, and it is often larger than the same clip as an MP4.

What is an MP4?

MP4 is the standard video file, saved by phones, cameras and editing apps, usually as H.264 or HEVC. This page also opens iPhone and QuickTime MOV files.

How the GIF is made

The page reads the video with WebCodecs, the decoder built into the browser. It takes frames from the start to the end at the frame rate you pick, scales them to your width, never wider than the video, and gives each frame its own palette of up to 256 colours. A GIF times frames in hundredths of a second, so 15 frames a second is written as 0.07 seconds a frame.

Questions

Is it private?

Yes. Your browser opens the video, makes the GIF and saves it to your device. No file is sent to creavio or anyone else, and nothing is stored after you close the tab.

How long can the GIF be?

Up to 15 seconds from the start to the end, from a video of any length up to 500 MB. A longer clip shows a message.

How do I make the GIF smaller?

Pick a smaller width, a lower frame rate or a shorter clip. The file grows with all three, so 320 pixels wide at 5 frames a second is the smallest.

Does it loop?

Yes, to start with. Turn loop off, and the GIF plays once and stops on its last frame.

Which browsers does it work in?

Current versions of Chrome and Safari. If this browser cannot decode a video, the page says so.
